Many people want whiter teeth but cannot afford the cost of a dental treatment. When a visit to the dentist is out of the question it is worth considering at home teeth whitening options, and luckily there are many out there. Over the counter products is big business and with so much choice there is bound to be something out there that suits your needs.

Teeth Whitening Toothpaste

The first, cheapest and perhaps most obvious option is teeth whitening toothpaste. This is used in the same way as ordinary toothpaste bit contains an active ingredient which gradually whitens your teeth. Simple by using a tooth whitening toothpaste in place of your regular toothpaste and you will be well on your way to a brighter set of pearly whites.

Teeth Whitening Gel

A popular option for at home teeth whitening is teeth whitening gel. These gels can be purchased over the counter and contain the active ingredient hydrogen peroxide which bleaches the teeth. You will need to use the gels over several weeks or months to get the desired effects, but you should start to notice results relatively quickly. The gel is applied to the teeth using a tray which fits up against the gum line. Make sure you get a tray that fits well and this will give you a more even coverage. Always ensure that you follow the instructions to the letter and do not deviate from them.

Teeth Whitening Strips

A product that has become very popular over the past few years are teeth whitening strips such as Crest Whitestrips. These are a very convenient way to apply teeth whitening product to your teeth. They come in handy packs that are also easy to take with you if you are away on business or vacation. The strips are perhaps less messy than other options and offer a cheap way to get whiter teeth.

Natural Alternatives

There are many natural ways to whitening your teeth. The first and foremost is to avoid foods and drinks that stain your teeth such as coffee and red wine, but that’s not much fun is it! So there are alternatives that you can use. One such treatment involves mixing your own tooth whitening paste using a combination of baking soda and citric acid (such as lemon juice). This forms a mild abrasive that can be used to whitening the teeth. These should be used sparingly as citric acid actually erodes tooth enamel and abrasives can cause tiny scratches on the teeth, which give more of a foothold for stains to hide in your teeth. So whilst natural remedies may seem like a good option, use your common sense when considering what options to pursue.

So there you have it, there are plenty of products out there that offer at home teeth whitening for a fraction of the cost of a professional dental treatment. The results will vary from product to product and person to person so it is best to try out that which is best for your time, budget and goals.
