Antique Rings

By

Rings serve many purposes in society. They are fashion statements, symbols of status, love and devotion. A ring can hold a special memory or tell a story that is passed from one generation to the next. While many people may choose to frequent a local jeweler and select from one of today's many styles and variations, there are just as many who see the value and charm of buying antique rings. The charm, uniqueness and history that's associated with buying an antique ring is a popular choice for engagement and wedding rings as well as for everyday jewelery wear.

Antique Rings Vs Vintage Rings

When first considering the purchase of an antique ring, it is important for the buyer to understand the difference between antique rings and vintage rings. To do this it is important to know what makes a ring an antique. Any ring that is 50 years or older is said to be considered an antique. Some manufacturers of jewelery label their rings using the wording antique, when in fact the ring being sold is a modern ring but with an older, more antique look. Vintage rings may also be newer rings from any various period of time but with an old world or antique look about them. Caution should be used and questions asked when buying a ring labeled vintage.

Which Era?

Another consideration when buying antique rings is the type or era that the buyer finds most appealing. There are three popular time periods: the Victorian period, the Edwardian period and the Art Deco period. 1837 to 1901 was known as the Victorian period. This is a very collectible time frame that symbolizes romance. It is characterized by rings that are set in yellow or rose gold. The antique cut of the diamonds in that period consist of the rose, Old World or Old Mine cut. Other inexpensive stones such as garnets, amethyst and opals were also quite popular. It was in this time period that the Tiffany engagement set was introduced.

The Edwardian period, which ran roughly from 1901 to 1915, is characterized by rings that are very delicate and sophisticated. It was this time period that filigree rings became popular. Stones were generally diamonds and pearls, but amethyst and peridot were also quite popular in a platinum or white gold setting.

Art Deco antique rings were predominate in the 1920 to 1935. There was a high emphasis on design and creativity during that period with the heavy usage of angles. Stones were often a combination of diamonds and other colored gems. Platinum and white gold were once again a popular choice for antique art deco rings.
